The world of PR is anything but dull. Every day is different, engaging and new.
Those looking to get into the industry might rightfully wonder what a day in the life at a PR firm looks like. While no two days are the same, some things remain consistent.
My normal day starts early and ends early too—I have the bedtime of someone three times my age. My days are always fun, and I look forward to seeing and talking to everyone I work with. There is no place like working at Lambert! A typical schedule might look something like the following.
5:30 a.m. Morning alarm clock sounds. It’s time to get up and get ready for the gym. I contemplate skipping the gym and sleeping, but I get out of bed because I know I’ll be happy I did
6:00 – 7:40 a.m. Work out, shower, make breakfast and head into work
7:40 – 8:15 a.m. Sit in stop-and–go rush hour traffic, listen to my favorite Detroit morning show (the best part of the morning)
8:15 a.m. Arrive at the office, turn on the computer and run through the day’s to-do list and meeting schedule. Start mentally preparing and identifying items that need to be completed first
8:15 – 9 a.m. Answer emails, distribute media pitches, call co-workers to touch base on active items, respond to client needs
9 – 11 a.m. Participate in internal meetings with my team members and host client meetings—my favorite activity, because I get to connect with my team members, strategize and showcase our expertise. Client meetings are also a good time to continue to build on our relationship with clients and get insight into their goals and objectives
11 – 12 a.m. Time to write! I put in my headphones and start drafting pitches, op-eds, press releases and meeting agendas in order to meet upcoming deadlines
12 – 1 p.m. Mental health break (lunch). Chat with my co-workers about work, weekend plans and general life updates. I always try to take a step outside to get some fresh air, have a change of scenery and spark inspiration before heading back to work. I laugh a lot during this time—I love my co-workers
1 – 2 p.m. Address urgent client needs, unforeseen events that arise. I connect with my team, draft statements, if needed, send to the team for review and send to the client
2 – 3 p.m. Meet with our intern and check in on her schedule, workload and any support needs she may have
3 – 4 p.m. Additional meetings with clients and team members
4 – 5:30 p.m. Step back into responding to emails, writing media materials and pitches, start drafting to-do list for tomorrow and input my hours for the day
5:30 p.m. Leave work to relax for the evening and prepare for another day in PR
5:30- 6:30 p.m. Sit in traffic and decompress from the day and complain about how people don’t know how to drive
6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Eat dinner with an audience (the joys of dogs)
7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Watch T.V., read, write in my journal, answer any urgent emails that pop up in my inbox
9:30 p.m. Bedtime (I told you, I’m a grandma)
