Ever been in a creative rut? It happens to the best of us. We could all benefit from a creative boost now and then, both in the workplace and in our personal lives.
In the realm of integrated marketing and public relations, creativity is essential. It not only helps us develop strong strategies and brand activations, but it also allows us to outmaneuver our client’s competition. Originality, big-picture thinking, and perspective are all characteristics of a successful, thorough PR practitioner.
But, we often become comfortable with the work we produce. When this happens, the work itself can become monotonous, and we may find it difficult to come up with new, inspiring ideas.
This may warrant the question “What are some techniques to enhance creativity?” If you find yourself in this position, I encourage you to try one—or more—of these approaches. Because the more you exercise your creative muscle, the stronger it will become.
- Unplug—Put your phone away. Go outside. Take a moment to do something you love. Or do absolutely nothing at all. Sometimes your best ideas come when you aren’t wracking your brain in hopes you’ll somehow figure it out.
- Brainstorm—A practice many of us at Lambert use regularly. Leveraging brainstorming sessions can assist in landing the perfect idea. They’re also a means to create a supportive, inclusive environment for more brainstorms and ideas to come.
- Surround yourself with the right people—Surrounding yourself with diverse thinkers and doers is more fun. Not to mention the growth you achieve professionally and personally if surrounded by those who are positive, motivated and push your thinking.
- Declutter— Put yourself in an environment where you can thrive. Taking the time to declutter your home, workplace and digital life can create a relaxed, enjoyable environment for a creative boost.
- Cultivate a positive mindset—Set short and long-term goals and make steps toward them. Consume motivational material. Turn failures into lessons. Focus on the present.
- Be curious—Active minds are powerful. A commitment to curiosity and learning links directly with higher creativity and deeper idea generation.
Just remember—creative ruts are normal. Allow yourself the luxury of taking the time and space necessary to flex your creativity muscle. Take a moment to switch up your usual routine and challenge yourself in new ways. By practicing the above, you may find that these creative ruts are fleeting—and just a part of the process.
